Background

SchoolNet Uganda-Close the Gap ICT4E pilot project is a 2 year project implemented by SchoolNet Uganda (http://schoolnetuganda.sc.ug ), in partnership with Close the Gap (http://www.close-the-gap.org ) and the beneficiary schools. The pilot project involves 20 secondary schools selected mainly from the western and northern parts of Uganda. Close-the-Gap was responsible for providing 10 computers to each of the participating schools. SchoolNet Uganda is responsibility for building the technical and pedagogical capacity necessary for optimally utilizing the computers to enhance teaching and learning and to provide on-going technical and pedagogical support to the participating schools.
The project is being expanded to include 30 more schools in 2011 selected from across the country.

The ICT4E Workshop for School Administrators

The 5-day Non-residential ICT4E workshop for school administrators (Head teachers, Deputy Head teachers and Directors of Studies )was organized and conducted by SchoolNet Uganda at Gayaza High School (16th Aug -20th Aug) 2010. It was attended by 17 project schools. SchoolNet Uganda was responsible for training, workshop materials and feeding costs and the schools were responsible for transporting participants to and from the workshop venue and for their accommodation costs.

Workshop Learning Outcomes

The workshop was conducted in such a way as to achieve the following learning outcomes:

• To enhance participants’ positive attitude towards the use of ICT in teaching and learning.
• To improve participants’ awareness of the potential of ICT to enhance teaching and learning across the curriculum.
• To build participant’s skills in using Bestgrade software (http://bestgrade.org/ ) to produce computerized student academic reports.
• To build participants’ knowledge and skills of integrating ICT in different subjects across the curriculum.
• To enhance participants’ information literacy, Internet research skills and presentation skills.
• To improve participants’ awareness of the challenges of implementing ICT4E projects and how these challenges can be addressed.
• To build participants’ capacity to implement project-based learning in their schools.

Attendance

The workshop was attended by school administrators from 15 schools namely : Aringa SS (Yumbe), Gulu College (Gulu), Bwera SS (Kasese), Masindi SS (Masindi), Gulu SS (Gulu), Bukomero SS (Kiboga), Dabani Girls (Busia), Iganga SS (Iganga), Masheruka Girls (Bushenyi), Mt. Rwenzori Girls (Kasese), Ndejje SS (Luwero), Transform Educational Centre (Wakiso), Karambi SS (Kasese), Kitara SS (Hoima) and Gayaza High School (Wakiso).
