Inspiring Science Education for Girls Using ICT – Science Teachers Training Workshop held (23rd -25th) April 2007 at Gayaza High School.

A total of 12 schools from 8 districts across the country were invited to the workshop. School (Kumi). Ten out of the 12 schools which were invited were purely Girls School and 2 were mixed schools. A total of sixty-five (65) teachers attended the training. The workshop was sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Sports and SchoolNet Uganda.

Workshop Objectives
The training was designed and professionally conducted by SchoolNet Uganda in such a way as to achieve the following objectives.

  • Provide science teachers with an opportunity to learn from each other and to share experiences regarding the challenges (factors that negatively affect learners’ classroom participation and teachers’ performance) in the teaching of sciences in Uganda schools and strategies to address them.
  • Sensitize Science teachers by way of demonstrating the concept of using ICT to enhance the teaching and learning of Science.
  • Provide science teachers with an opportunity for informal and formal academic interactions and engagement.
  • Introduce teachers to active methods of learning in Science, aimed at initiating a pedagogical paradigm shift from teacher-centered to learner-centered teaching methodologies.
  • Provide teachers with an opportunity to experience what it means to be a student using ICT in science learning.
  • Build teachers’ capacity to evaluate educational science software and to create and conduct learning activities using Science software.
  • Train teachers to use modern tools of teaching beyond the chalk-and-blackboard e.g. computers, Internet, video equipment, LCD projectors etc.
  • Enhance teachers’ self esteem, communication and presentation skills.
  • Create a “Community of Practice” of science teachers who can continue supporting each other even after the workshop.
  • Provide Science teachers with ICT-based multimedia educational content. Materials used in the training were provided free to the workshop participants.
