The ICT in Education Training Workshop for School administrators held (11th -15th) May 2009 at the Computer Refurbishment and Training Centre located at Kyambogo College School.
SchoolNet Uganda in partnership with Kyambogo College School and the Ministry of Education and Sports organized and conducted a 5-day non-residential ICT in Education Training workshop for school administrators. The workshop was held at the recently completed Computer Refurbishment and Training Centre from 11th -15th May 2009. This workshop was the first of the series of professional development workshops for school administrators.
Workshop objectives:
- To provide the school administrators an opportunity to brainstorm the challenges they face in acquiring, optimally utilizing and sustaining the ICT resources in schools for the purpose of enhancing the teaching and learning process.
- To equip the school administrators with the basic technical-need to know information required to purchase, maintain and upgrade their schools ICT facilities.
- To equip the school administrators with the skills needed to make ICT enhanced presentations.
- To introduce the school head teachers to interactive educational software that supports child-centred learning and demonstrates how ICT can be integrated in the curriculum.
- To provide the school administrators an opportunity to brainstorm the challenges of providing Teacher Pedagogical Professional Development and to share best practice for teacher professional development.
- To enhance the school administrators capacity to use Internet as a communication and teaching and learning tool.
- To introduce the school Head teachers to how to set up a School Digital Library which does not require Internet access as a supplement to the traditional book library.
- To introduce the school administrators to the Uganda Innovative Teachers’ and Schools’ Forum and how to take opportunities provided by the forum.
- To introduce the school Head teachers to project-based learning and using youth media to link the schools to the community (Adobe Youth Voices).
- To provide an opportunity to Head teachers to hear personal testimonies of how ICT has impacted teachers’ and students’ lives.
- To provide school Headteachers an oportunity to formally and informally interact for the purpose of knowledge sharing and networking.
- To get ideas and suggestions from the school Head teachers on how best schools can be supported in order to optimally use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance teaching and learning in schools.
Workshop logistics:
The workshop was held on a partnership and cost-sharing model between Ministry of Education and Sports, Kyambogo College School, SchoolNet Uganda, MTN Uganda and the participating schools.
(i) The Ministry of Education and Sports provided the training facilities – the newly completed computer refurbishment and training centre based at Kyambogo College School.
(ii) MTN Uganda provided very fast Internet connectivity for the 5 day training free of charge.
(ii) Kyambogo College School provided pedagogical and technical support and was responsible for organizing the meals.
(iii) SchoolNet Uganda was in-charge of the overall coordination and training of the workshop and workshop costs.
(iv) Each participating school was responsible for transporting its head teacher to and from the workshop and for meals (2 teas and lunch).
Because of the importance of the workshop (as a capacity building event for school administrators), Head teachers who were not able to attend in person, were requested to send their deputies or Director of Studies (DOS).
