One of the lessons, SchoolNet Uganda has learnt in the implementation of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in schools is the need for infrastructure (ICT facilities), capacity building (for both Headteachers as torch bearers and teachers as doers) and educational content for the successful use of ICT in enhancing the teaching and learning process.

SchoolNet Uganda conducted a two-day Non-residential ICT in Education sensitization workshop for interested Headteachers of secondary schools held at Gayaza High School, (19th August – 20th August) 2008.

Workshop objectives :

• To provide the school administrators an opportunity to brainstorm the challenges they face in acquiring, optimally utilizing and sustaining the ICT resources in schools for the purpose of enhancing the teaching and learning process.
• To introduce the school head teachers to interactive educational software that supports child-centred learning and to demonstrate to the school Headteachers how ICT can be integrated in the curriculum.
• To introduce the school Headteachers to project-based learning

• To introduce and give a hands-on experience to new technologies which support learning like SMART interactive Whiteboard and NComputing. The SMART Interactive whiteboard is a touch-sensitive screen which connects to a computer. Ncomputing is a technology which allows connecting up to 7 monitors (screens) and keyboards to the same computer (system units) so that more students can use the same computer to do different things.
• To introduce the school Headteachers to how to set up a School Digital Library which does not require Internet access as a supplement to the traditional book library.
• Introduce the school Headteachers to a new project (Adobe Youth Voices) to be implemented by SchoolNet Uganda in partnership with iEARN-USA and Adobe Foundation and select the 10 pilot schools for 2008-2009 project cycle.
• To get ideas and suggestions from the school Headteachers on how best schools can be supported in order to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance teaching and learning in schools.

Workshop logistics:

The workshop was held on a cost-sharing model between SchoolNet Uganda and the participating schools.

SchoolNet Uganda was responsible for hiring the workshop venue and facilities, meals (teas and lunch) and for the time compensation of the workshop facilitators.

The participating schools were responsible for transporting their Head teachers to and from the workshop venue and also for the accommodation of their Headteachers for those coming from far. Participants arranged for their own accommodation.
