WORLD BANK PHOTO CONTEST 2004
In June 2004, the World Bank organized a world-wide photo contest for 14-20 year olds. The theme of the photo contest was “My Vision, My Voice”. The youth were expected to show through pictures their world- as it develops. What they think it needs more of, less of –schools, jobs, training, health services or something nobody else has thought of? What else they see and what the world should see.
Each contestant was allowed to submit up to 10 photos. Each photo had to be accompanied by a caption having
a minimum of 7 words and a maximum of 50 words.
SchoolNet Uganda was represented by students of Mengo Senior School, Wanyange Girls school, Nyenga SS Kidudu and St. Peters Nkokonjeru.
The SchoolNet Uganda student contestants were provided with disposable cameras which were donated by the World Bank through World Links Organization.
Judging took place in August 2004 at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington DC. The contest was judged by representatives of the youth community and professionals in the fields of development, photography and journalism. The photos were judged on composition, creativity and the ability to tell a story using images and captions.
Invited by the World Bank in partnership with World Links Organization more than 650 participants from 43 nations, speaking 7 languages submitted some 11,000 images reflecting their vision of today and tomorrow.
SchoolNet Uganda was honoured to have the 3rd (Bahati Alikadi –St. Peters Nkokonjeru), 5th (Cornelius Mukisa -Nyenga SS Kidudu) and 7th (Kate Lubandi – Wanyange Girls School) overall winners.
The World Bank office in Uganda organized the awards ceremony to which the Uganda students and their parents were invited. The World Bank representative in Uganda who presided over the ceremony took of time to talk to the students. This was a very exciting moment for students.
Bahati Alikadi, the 3rd overall winner received a Canon EOS Elan 7 SLR and $100 (USD) in camera equipment. The other two students also received presents.
